Nakita Sekhon
(She/Her/Hers)
Nakita Sekhon is a clinical counselling intern completing her Master of Counselling degree at City University of Seattle (Canada). She is currently in her practicum placement, where she is building her clinical experience and preparing to register as a clinical counsellor upon completion of her internship hours. Nakita views her role as one of walking alongside clients, supporting them through their own unique journeys of healing, growth, and change.
Identifying as a cisgender, queer, disabled/neurodivergent, Indo-Canadian settler and woman of colour, Nakita recognizes that people’s experiences of mental health, wellness, and access to care are deeply shaped by intersecting identities, histories, and systems of oppression. She understands that many individuals, families, and communities face barriers rooted not in personal shortcomings but in broader structures such as racism, ableism, colonialism, heteronormativity, and classism. Her work is grounded in an anti-oppressive and decolonial lens, with the intention of creating space where clients feel seen, respected, and supported in all of who they are.
Nakita believes that every person has the capacity for growth and change, though the pace and shape of that process is different for each individual. She strives to create a counselling environment that is non-judgmental, safe, and supportive—a space where clients can reflect on their past, explore their present, and imagine new possibilities for the future. She views counselling as a collaborative process, where clients set the direction and Nakita walks beside them, offering tools, insight, and presence along the way.
Her approach to counselling is both professional and deeply personal. In addition to her academic and clinical training, Nakita draws on her lived experiences within the health care system and through profound personal loss. These experiences have given her compassion, humility, and a deep appreciation of the courage it takes to seek support. They also shape her ability to connect with clients who may feel overwhelmed, isolated, or unseen in their struggles.
Nakita works with individuals, families, and youth from a wide range of backgrounds. Her particular areas of focus include neurodiversity, disability, health-related challenges, grief, and life transitions. She is especially passionate about working with people navigating complex life experiences—whether that involves illness, caregiving, loss, or the challenges of living in a world that does not always provide equitable access or understanding.
Her counselling practice is rooted in person-centred, solution-focused, humanistic, and developmental approaches. She also integrates aspects of narrative therapy, psychodynamic perspectives, and existential thought. This means that her work is flexible and responsive: she may focus on practical strategies in one session, explore meaning-making and identity in another, and hold space for grief or uncertainty in another. Her goal is always to meet clients where they are, honouring their stories and supporting their capacity for resilience.
Beyond her practicum training, Nakita has a background in youth and family counselling, community mental health, and disability advocacy. She has supported individuals and families in navigating systemic barriers, accessing resources, and building stronger support networks. This work has deepened her awareness of the social and structural challenges that impact well-being and has strengthened her commitment to helping clients not only cope with challenges but also find empowerment in their lives.
Nakita is dedicated to lifelong learning and professional development. She is continually engaging in both formal and informal opportunities for growth—through courses, trainings, mentorship, and self-reflection. Her hope is to keep expanding her knowledge and skills so she can offer the most responsive and effective support to the people she works with. Outside of her counselling work, Nakita enjoys spending time with her partner and toddler. Parenthood and family life continue to shape her perspective, teaching her about patience, joy, and the complexities of balancing multiple roles. She is grateful to live and work on the unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations, and she carries a deep sense of responsibility to practice in ways that honour the land and the peoples whose care for it stretches back generations.
